Scope and Contents

This is an autograph letter signed from the geologist and reformer Leonard Horner to his daughter Lady Mary Lyell, widow of Sir Charles Lyell, quoting letters from Thomas Longman and the son of Macvey Napier about an Edinburgh Review article on W. H. Prescott. The letter is dated 31 July 1860.

This is an autograph letter signed from Leonard Horner to [Samuel Birch], dated 18 August 1861, Bury St Edmonds. The letter relates to the hypothesis that burnt bricks were known in Egypt before the time of the Romans, which Birch, Lyell and Horner defended against Archdeacon John Pratt.
